hey what's up influencers in this video iinterview katheryn from doitonadime hey guys ! and we are going tobe talking about her tips of how she build an organizationdiy frugal living youtube channel for the last five years to over a quarterof million subscribers and over 30 million views coming up hey what's up influencers sean here with videoinfluencers helping you build your influence income andimpact with online video and today i'm super excited tobe interviewing katheryn from doitonadime katheryn how's it going ? it'sgoing awesome how are you
doing ? i'm doing fantastic and for thosewatching maybe haven't got to see your channel get give us like a 30 secondbreakdown of what you do and what are you all about sure so my videocontent focuses on organization and frugal living and easy diy so just simplethings that anybody can do to live better and on a dime i love that nowtake us back briefly to the story like how did you take your passion andyour expertise and turn it into video content and get into youtube in thefirst place so it started at 2011 and i had a vlog that no body read butmy family and i got a flip camera for christmas which is i feel likeevery youtuber started
basically back in the day and i just decidedto record myself going around the house showing really budget friendlythings that i bought from the dollar store and the thrift storeand i uploaded the video i didn't think anybody was gonna watch itand i came by a few months later to find that i had several thousand viewsand there were over a hundred people subscribed to my channel andi was like i can't believe this is happening and i thought wow there's reallysomething here i should talk to these hundred people that want to see morecontent and it just kinda evolved from there wow and so you've got thatflip cam and you got started
and now over the years your channel has justexploded and a quarter of million subscribers from back then a hundred viewslike you mention what has kind of been the progression and maybe kind of thegrowth curve and some of the things you've notice about your youtube channelover the years amm so i really think i mean honestly thedefining moments in my channel have always been times where i collaborated orsomehow gotten together with another youtuber so you know we sharedorganization content or i enter in a contest or something likethat just to kinda get my content out there more
really some of my most popular videos havebeen videos about the dollar store believe it or not you know just kinda do thingssimply and i think starting out in 2011 that was when the recession reallyhit and nobody was really putting content out there about having anorganized home on a really small budget and i think it just resonated witha lot of people you know so that content really filtrated a lot of new subscriberswho then became interested in the other things i was sharing wow that'sa powerful insight that probably by a little bit of serendipity but just ingeneral that your content came at even an strategic kind of cultural timewhether intentional or not that's interesting
how did you get into some of those first collaborations'cause i know i think a lot of people that are video influencersthey want to get into that but for you how did you discover those andwhat were kind of the pivot points were you were you know you felt like yourchannel was big enough to connect with them or what are your insightson those yeah absolutely so i guess i can kinda speak fromyou know where i am now but also where i was back then but i really feeljust reaching out with those initial contacts specially because it was such a smallcommunity i was like hey we should do something together we shouldcollaborate but i really think you
know speaking to an audience now i can eventhink of a collab that i did recently with britney from the swearbeauty am justto take content and just say hey check out this other youtuber but we actuallyshared video footage so she gave me video footage to put in my video so her subscriberscould be like hey this is katheryn i might want to check her out and hey thisis britney and i might want to check her out and that was really really powerful so justutilizing somebody who's in your same niche and also kinda i don't knowadding content to i don't know if i'm explaining myself rightbut kinda giving them video footage that they can use in their videosthat really create a powerful
network because when people see somethingspecially youtube audience they wanna check it out that's reallyreally good so those are like higher quality collaborationswhere you are sending footage to each other and just reachingout and being bold i love that now one of the things that reallystood out to me about your channel was that i get to your about pageand i kinda looked at your channel in general had such good story andhad really good branding and even a mission statement right there and i'llread it is you go hi i'm katheryn i'm on a mission to lead a beautifulorganized lifestyle on a
frugal budget let me show you how i live lifeon a dime and i was like wow ok immediately i felt kind of some emotions inthere clarity and it was all condense into this kind of one sentence i think thatfor influencers watching what have been your tips on getting clearon your channel on telling your story and even on having a mission thatis behind your content i mean i wish i could say it started off myfirst video i knew what the mission was and all i'm not going to lie i probablydidn't get that mission statement until maybe a year or two ago like you saidit was very serendipitous i chose do it on a dime because i wanted todo something frugal but the
word frugal was so over use oh i need to namemy channel guess doitonadime works and then you know as my content sortof evolved and grew i really wanted to pick something that waslarger than just me because that was what i really felt resonated withan audience right like they want to tune in and they want something theycan learn from and i wanted the mission statement to reflectthat and i wanted my content to reflect that so you know that waskind of the motivation behind creating something like that i meani guess it could apply to anything not just organizing stuff whetheryou are just a daily
vlogger and your mission is you know to spreadlove that's something too but just to have it be something bigger than justhey i'm me that is so great and influencers listen tothis this is really powerful i think one of the biggest things that canreally make you stand out in a crowded youtube space is having a missionand telling kind of a story and it even goes further onyour blog about page and so i'll link up those resources but definitelygood things to look at what are some of your tips that have helpedyou maybe craft that and it was encouraging to hear that you didn'tjust start with clarity
you are talking for five years right now you'remaybe learning you're kind of growing it was about a year ago asyou sort of had that clarity and you were able to put it there but wasthere any tools or resources that helped you think about that and thatjust helped you come up with that could help influencers watching i honestlythink listening to what my subscribers were looking for becausei feel like every creator goes to those moments where they're like manwhat should my content be about what's my next step and reallylistening to the comments from subscribers saying hey this really resonatedwith me or hey can
you share more of this i was able to kindaget more clarity of what to create videos about because when you see people's questionsyou can answer them in a video and so kinda seeing where that was trendingand people wanted to live more organize and more simply you know i was ableto say ok this is were i really need to horn in because this is whatmy audience was looking for plus i really liked shooting that kinda stuffi love it brilliant now one of the things that's absolutely incredible aboutwhat you are doing that i think that everybody can relate to at someone or another is that none of us have enough time in our day andyou get a lot done and
specifically as a wife a mother a teacherstill part time teacher and who's posting videos on your main channelwho is posting vlogs who's doing your blog as well how do you getit done and what have been kinda your organization tips tostay consistent over these years while juggling so much yeah thisquestion comes at a perfect time my son is walking up the stairsright now with my mom i mean i think that's the crux of everythingright it's trying to stay motivated and organize and i mean some ofthese ideas i guess touch on even some of the things i talk about in myvideos but i would say the
first thing that's really helped me is sittingright here is having a planner and just planning out everything and i actuallydon't have a consistent upload schedule i know a lot of youtuberscome up with videos every tuesday and thursday and that's just neverwork for me just because i'm wearing so many hats i would be so overwhelmso i just made a goal for my self that i want to have weekly content formy viewers and it works out to be about once every four or five days i'llpost a video and so that really keeps me motivated in of that itselfcause it can work with my schedule i also find it really help full 'causeit's so much back end stuff with youtube
social media the tags and the descriptionsand just having a list of everything that has to be accomplish for video i havejust a master list i look at from the idea to the creation ofthe video you know the filming the editing you know the titles the tags and ican just go through each thing and check it off as i'm able that just reallyhelps me kinda stay focus and able to get done what i need to get doneand i've been teaching actually for 10 years i'm going on my 10 yearteaching and probably one of the very best things i've ever heard froma teacher conference actually was that when kids are learning they can onlyhandle 7 new chunks of
information at a time and if they try to domore than that they become really overwhelm and it was in that momenti was like that is so true for adult too so when i sit down to plan outmy day with mom stuff and work stuff and youtube i just think aboutwhat are the 7 biggest priorities that i have to get done and i justwork towards those things and i find that number is kinda like my balancenumber of not to many things but you know i'm still being productive andmoving forward those are some incredible tips and specifically ok so youare about every four or five days on your main channel but you also have a vlogchannel and you also post blogs
what are what are maybe your content checklist across all your platforms or your goal of how much to be posting somy vlog channel is kinda my fun outlet channel and that sort of stands fromjust subscriber asking to see more and me wanting to share more 'cause havinga family those are some fun moments to be able to document so actuallyon that channel i don't have any pressure on myself to post anything it's justwhen i feel like it would be a fun time to post content i'll share something and thatkeeps the hard of it really pure and just fun and engaging and that's kinda myfund space i guess and then i sort of have a more dedicated schedule tomy organizing channel and then
written blogs do those stay consistent tooyeah so typically what i'd do is that's actually the last step after i've doneall my other steps i'll post on to my blog and i like having a blog becausewith my tip of content is very great for shareable things in terms ofpinterest and that those types of places which you know can further expandyour content and that's the last thing i'll do and i don't spend a lot of timewriting i mostly post the video and then a short description of the video any extra informationpeople might want affiliate links that sort of thing all kindof centralize in one spot brilliant now what are some of your tips when it comesto getting your videos to
stand out and specifically your titles yourdescriptions and your tags now that's so interesting 'cause i was of courselooking at your channel and i was noticing you aren't just organized in yourlife and in your home but you are also organized even there and there's a nightthere's real intentionality there have you develop over over time to reallycome up with good titles or what are some of your strategies there well forsure i feel like some videos man if i would of title that differently that mightof have a different response i think the biggest thing and i don't know whatthis is but i had really big success with three word titles so anything with threewords in it and i know
with a lot of youtubers now is they have theirmain title and a little line what ever it's call and then a subtitle behindit but having just whatever you are talking about boiled down to three words peopletend to click on those a lot more i look at what my subscribers are saying whatthey're asking about and incorporate that lingo into my title has alwaysbeen really helpful i love google trends for coming up with ideasif you don't know if that is it's seeing what the most search items areand the frequency how much are growing or declining on searches so youcan put those into your titles and recently i had a partner manager fromyoutube who talks to me about
once a month you know helping me to grow mychannel so this idea came straight from youtube but that descriptionsare more important than tags are which i never knew that i'msure you knew that but i never knew that and so i spent a lot of time recently reallybiffing up my descriptions to have a lot of keywords in them not a list but in paragraph form ofwhat is this video about you know tags are important but that's where the youtubealgorithm is going to pick up a lot of traffic and so i have notice thatmy videos with bigger descriptions do have more views than the ones with outwow power power tip now let's talk
about video creation and before the call youeven kinda mention that you know being a video influencers you think you haveto be super technical but you mention that's not the case right no i you've beenyeah what has been your learning curve and what kind of getting into gear getting intoediting and teaching yourself all that stuff oh my goodness so i probably imean as a teacher i could probably ask my students more questions about whati need to do tech wise i tend to go on youtube and i just search and there willbe you know some 16 year old explaining in an amazing way how to do somethingso i really dove in i watch a lot of videos read a lot of stuff i meani really found
that tech wise you can get away with i meani'm on a dime do it on a dime you know pretty simple low investments witha big pay out and so i'm still using imovie it's something thatworks for me i have a dslr camera which is a t3i canon t3i and i love it i thinkit's a great price point for kinda that entry level camera and i justrecently got a 55 millimeter lens you can get that you know really nice crispimage but that pretty focal background which i know a lot of people look after buti feel like for me at least it's a really big jump if you go back andyou see some of my old videos i kinda wanna say don't do that because they'reso bad but at the same time
the lighting was horrible and lighting makessuch a difference in videos and just i mean even taking that little investmentin 50 dollar lights in amazon shot my channel up to the next level havingreally quality audio quality mic those types of things so i mean reallyin terms of gear wise i'm pretty simple but i focus on those three thingsa dslr camera lighting and an audio and kinda honed in on that so i can get reallygood at it and eventually i can start you know branching out because if you tryto bite off too much its just it can be overwhelming if you are new to it absolutelythose are such great tips and i'm also wondering you mention your plannerbut i imagine i'm
curious about your process for coming up withvideo ideas do for your main channel and being a head on what you videoideas are you already mention on tool google trends about what do you haveyou plan ahead for your video ideas how do you come up with them and what's yourworkflow like that to keep the upcoming video ideas listed out or thingslike that so i have a master list of all video ideas and i alwaystell myself at least at the very beginning subscribers in the commentshey can you do a video about this and i think oh yeah i should but if ididn't write it down i would never get to it and so anytime that somebody says thatthey want a video or somebody
likes that comment i just have a master listand it is not organize it is every video idea and then from that usually per monthi'll pull some of those ideas and add them to my monthly calendar and theni can see ok these are things these are the things that might be a goodfit for this month what do i want to tackle and i usually have my videos done a few daysto a week in advance and i can just go through that list so if i'm everfeeling not creative or what am i suppose to do i can just go to that list that bigand the best thing is i didn't have to think of those ideas they were given tome you know they were given to me in comments or even in other peoples videospeople has left comments
you know if you are just building up yourfollowing you can see what is the community asking for and fill in that gapi love it now one of the things that video influencers is all about is helpinginfluencers build their income and what has been your progression from starting to nowand specifically you were different streams of revenue i know a lot of influencers watchingalready realized that google adsense is only gonna usually be one part of youroverall online video and brand strategy what is that like for you and how is it maybebroken down on what it produces for you sure so i mean when i started i startedpurely for the passion of it and i did not have a single dime so it wasjust me covering it all
for a long time and i still remember thatfirst check from google for a hundred dollars saying oh my goodness i cant believe it just happenbut i feel like definitely beginning adsense was the biggest stream from sure reallythe only stream but as my channel has grown ive had the opportunityto work with some brands and so i would say that at thispoint about 50 to 40 % of my revenue is from adsense and then probablyabout 30 % or so its brand integration deals or sponsorvideos and then the rest is affiliate links and that sort of thing whensometimes working
with brands or amazon or whatever happensto be that's awesome and what is been your few tips in how when youstarted to get into some of those brand and kind of sponsorship videos a lotof people are wondering how to reach out when to reach out how maybebig their channel needs to be what are your tips in that space i mean ithink the biggest thing i've never well i shouldn't say never i have reach outto brands before kind of some mom and pop start up companies that i justloved their product and and just wanted to share that's pretty muchit for the most part i've had brands contact me there's a lot of great sitesnow that have a bunch
brand offerings that you can go check outto see if you are in alignment with those and i have use those in the past andi have had good experiences with them and you know for the most part it's just beensome calls of the brands and ask me hey are you interested and my first questionto myself is do i love this product and do i think it's going to benefitmy subscribers and if the answer to that is yes i peruse it and i am super super pickythere is always another brand but your relationship with your subscribersand the trust that you have with them it's the most important thing so you knowif it cruses those thresholds then we are interested if not then we can move on to talksuch a great frame work i loved
those two questions now let me asked you thiswhat has been the greatest challenge over the growth of doitonadime in these lastfew years and what did you do to overcome it we kinda touched on this a little bit beforeprobably just the creative slumps that you get in and just feeling overwhelmed with somuch stuff that you have to do you know my son was born that was a challengeyou know just trying to find a balance things and i was just say finding back theheart of why you started because you have to be so passionate aboutthe content you are creating otherwise when you hit that slump you aregonna want to stay in the slump
and so the fact that i really do love sharingliving on a dime or living organized has really carry me through andjust kinda coming from a fresh perspective maybe trying new content thatyou haven't tried before and seeing how you're subscriber like it that'sactually how i came up with a series on my channel called cooking with carson myson i said hey i'm not sure what to post we should post a cooking videoyou know cooking with a 2 year old and that's what we did and my subscribersreally enjoyed it so that kinda became that new avenue of content forme and i wouldn't have known that they would have liked it have i not triedi love it such great tip
now one of the things i noticed on your faqpage on your website was you do have some youtube advice thereand i'm curious what are some of the biggest tips or actually yourbiggest observations of the mistakes that either new video influencers are makingor maybe once that are they're plateaued their stock and they can't figureout why when people reach out to you what's the advice that you give surei think i think trusting your self is a big thing and just trusting your voice and goingfor it it's probably the biggest thing in terms of like technical things thati've noticed even though i'm not very techy you know people maybe in a similarniche to me or doing
a lot of this confessional type videos lightingis a really big thing just having really good well light videoscan really specially 'cause there's such good content out there they're so manypeople starting up with amazing content but maybe it's a little hard to seeit's a little dark it's not as good a quality so just doing those littletiny things to boost your quality is i think very important and i also think not beingafraid to reach out to a youtuber who maybe has more subscribers than you becausei know for a fact there's been so many youtubers that i've discovered becausethey commented so consistently on my videos and i'm not talkingabout hey come check out my
channel bye i'm talking about hey i reallyliked this have you thought about this and then over time you start to recognizefaces and it's like hey i know that person and i click on their videos and that sortof thing and i know youtubers that i have admire for so long whatsupmoms i lovetheir channel i frequently commented on their videos and i was able when i wasin la to actually collab with their channel because i had commented on their videoand they had seen who i was and so don't be afraid to be in the communityand think just because somebody has more subscribers than you or has been on youtubefor longer that you cant develop a relationship with them because youknow i've gotten to know a lot
of people just throw the comments and beingreally intentional about it i love that deep engagement in the communitylonger term more authentic kind of relationships not those quick quickcomments but really looking to the long haul right ? absolutely yeah sogood well we are in the lighting round here we go lighting round 3 2 1 coffee or tea ? coffee what's the biggest area you think most peopleare wasting money right now? probably on food because a lot of people throwaway a lot of food talking or texting ? talking i know a lotof people aren't gonna like that answer
but i'm a talker last thing that you grabbedout of the fridge ? chocolate favorite place in the whole wide world.. waityou have chocolate in your fridge ? yeah i keep them it's stays fresher longeri love it favorite place in the whole world spain favorite nickname for yourself ? i actuallydon't have any nicknames nobody has ever called me a nickname i amalways just katheryn which is kinda weird biggest pet peeve ? people smacking theirgum cat or dog ? dog i'm allergic to cats last song you had on repeat ? oh this is probablygonna be kind of embarrassing but it's probably the wheels on the bus inthe car and my son wasn't even in
the car and i realized it was on ok if youcould have one thing one thing during a zombie apocalypse what would thatone thing be ? we were just talking about this last night watching thewalking dead we definitely would have to have a machete like michonnehas smart favorite youtube channel right now probablyhome organizing by alejandra your go to comfort food ? chocolate again and what is the best advice you've ever received? to be yourself and don't apologize for it what is one book that you think everyinfluencers should read i think every influencers should read tuesdayswith morrie that's a good one boom
lighting round boom lighting round we didit ok kinda final questions first of all where can people connect withyou and so we'll link up all of your channel and social media in theyoutube description so influencers definitely check that out but specificallywhat do you have coming up and where are you most consistent so probablymy youtube channel is the biggest and best place to find all my contentand i've got a tone of organizing videos coming up to keep your home simple and workwith a budget i love it your content its absolutely incredible and thank you somuch for really sharing your answers with the world like it's helping a lot ofpeople you've helping them save money
but also live beautiful lives you are trulyan inspiration not just on youtube but just in life in general so thank you awwthank you so much i really enjoyed this you got it now final word of encouragementor tip to leave with everybody for the influencers watching you do you justkeep being yourself and and keep working on and do what makes you happy withyour content because that's what's going to sustain you when youhit the slump you do because if you're shining somebody is going to see it and they'regonna love it doitonadime everybody thank you yay thank you so much
